Yet in her singing, she showed the kind of seasoned and assured rock 'n' roll voice you'd expect from an artist significantly older, from Janis Joplin to Joan Jett to Bonnie Raitt.<br /><br />Small wonder so many viewers thought Iraheta got robbed when she found herself voted off four spots from the top. Many — including yours truly — felt it was Iraheta, not eventual winner Kris Allen, who deserved to go head-to-head with Adam Lambert for the ultimate crown. <br /><br />Some in the industry must have agreed, because Iraheta went on to become one of just two "Idol" contestants to fall so far from the top who still landed a major-label record contract. (The other was Daughtry, who wound up outselling almost every other singer who won.)<br /><br />The rarity of Iraheta's feat, and the unfairness of what preceded it, lends a special drama to her debut. It could well make viewers suffer pangs of guilt for their original vote. <br /><br />Unfortunately, the CD has precisely the opposite effect. "Just Like You" sounds little like the Iraheta we loved on TV. It's a peppy little rock record, as you'd expect, with lots of assertive lyrics and a yen for hard guitars. But there's a boilerplate quality to the material that drags Iraheta down. Worse, there's an overplaying of the production that simply swamps her.<br /><br />Nearly every cut features a pile-driving assault of guitar, bass and drums and flattens them all into what sounds like one synthetic instrument. There's no sense of a flesh-and-blood band backing her, something that would have gone a long way toward individualizing the sound. <br /><br />Instead, we get the same corporate style you hear steamrolling over every wanna-be teen girl rocker today, from Miley Cyrus to Hilary Duff to Demi Lovato. That's not the company Iraheta ought to be keeping. <br /><br />At least some attempts were made to connect her to a worthier, more appropriate role model. The song "Robot Love" samples an old Gary Glitter hit, making an inevitable, and welcome, reference to Jett, who began her solo career by covering a song by that glam star. But the overheated production stomps out all the swing. <br /><br />The album's two most enjoyable songs — the Mersey Beat-like single "Friday I'll Be Over U" and "Beat Me Up" — highlight the hook, not the star. Songs like these practically sing themselves. <br /><br />What Iraheta needed was a producer who would leave more room around her voice, allowing her to both show her chops and risk expressing something blue. <br /><br />On "American Idol," Iraheta already proved that her chesty voice has enough grit and meaning for solid rock 'n' roll.
